Cavendish equals Merckx in the Tour … but not yet in the Six Days

Mark Cavendish made history today in the Tour de France. The British sprinter booked his 34th stage victory in the Tour in Carcassonne, equaling Eddy Merckx’s supposedly unapproachable record.

In the Tour Cavendish and Merckx are now on an equal footing in the number of stage victories, but to equal Merckx in ‘t Kuipke, Cav will have to come back a few more times. The Briton won the Lotto Zesdaagse Vlaanderen-Gent 1 time (2016), Merckx 4 times (1965, 1967, 1975 and 1977). But one thing is certain. They are both living legends of cycling!
